Today, Augusto Grau shares a few survival tips when spending 6 months in Hong-Kong (China).
Where to stay?
The most feasible lodging option would be to search on Airbnb, but if you are willing to invest in your stay, iconic hotels such as the Peninsula or the Ritz Carlton would certainly leave you dazzled.
Where to dine?
Wherever I travel, I always seek to experience the true, authentic, local flavors. During my time in Hong-Kong (China), I could not imagine missing out on the dim sum and on the extensive seafood offer:
- Sun Hing in Kennedy Town is one of the few places that makes hand-made dim sum to-date. It is a must!
- Lamma Island: for the seafood experience, the best thing to do is to take a ferry to and dine in one of the many seafront restaurants. While waiting for the ferry, go for a relaxing walk through the many paved hiking paths and enjoy the picturesque views.
What to visit?
Within seven days you can tick most of the attractions off the typical “tourist list”:
- The Peak, which is known to be Hong-Kong (China)'s most popular tourist attraction. In fact, it offers a collection of must-see and must-do activities, from shopping and dining venues to a 360° panoramic view and nature walks.
- Tia Tan Buddha or Big Buddha, which is the biggest Buddha statue built outdoor with its 34 meter height and one of the most iconic symbols in Hong-Kong (China), sits at the top of Mount Muk Yue. Try the forest paths to get there. They are more challenging, more natural and you will meet fewer tourists!
- Avenue of Stars, which is based on a waterfront, is one of the most popular places of the city. The attraction pays tributes to players of the local film industry, holds multiple exhibitions, musical shows and drama performances, and cultural programs.
- Ocean Park, from roller coasters to animal shows, loads of diversified and exciting activities are waiting for you in this very popular and touristic park!
If you extend your journey by a few more days, you will be able to spend a night in Macau or take a short day trip to mainland China, without, of course, forgetting a visa!

Where to shop?
You might be surprised that, while visiting Central District, you will be surrounded by all the luxury brands we find in Europe. For a true shopping experience, go to Kowloon district:
- Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po, where the offer extends from traditional tea houses to the latest tech gadgets. Remember, the important trick is bargaining. Start by offering half of the price they ask for and walk away once you reach 70%. Most of the time they will chase you back!
Where to relax?
Enjoy a nice walk! You will be surprised by the amount of small shops: tailors, tea shops, souvenirs, street food… The list goes on.
As for relaxing, most outlying islands can be reached within an hour by hopping on a ferry:
- Lantau Island, and largest outlying island of Hong-Kong (China), will definitely put sparkles in your eyes with its various must-see places and must-do activities. Its Buddhist architecture - including the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery - the Local Specialty Market at Tai O, the Dolphin Watching Tour will leave you wanting for more every time!
- Lamma Island, the third largest island in Hong-Kong (China), is famous for its various multilevel outdoor excursions, its cultural sites and its attractive scenery.
- Repulse Bay, on Hong Kong Island, is most certainly one of the most beautiful beaches you will find in Hong-Kong (China). It is known to be an upmarket residential area which could be perceived as a resort. Popular with both locals and tourists, Repulse Bay provides its visitors with designer shops and award-winning restaurants.
- Big Wave Bay Beach, Shek O, at the eastern end of Hong-Kong (China) Island, offers a beautiful view on the ocean and different water sport activities such as windsurfing. It is also close to the Dragon's Back and its 5 hiking trail and its outstanding coastal scenery.

Where to go out?
One of the smartest ways to start a thrilling night out in Hong Kong is to go to one of the many Karaoke rooms:
- Red Mr in Wan Chai, is probably one of the most exciting Karaoke bars of the city
- Lan Kwai Fong is where you want to go out to when aiming for an unforgettable night out in Hong-Kong (China). From famous nightclubs to dining venues, from spending an amazing time with your friends to meeting new people from all around the world, your night will be one you will not easily forget.
- If you reach the end of the night and cannot find your friends in the crowd, it is time to search for a Kebab shop (no, I’m not kidding). You will surely make new friends there!
